The root flux is applied to the root side (some 2 mm thick) before welding; protects against welding-related oxidation.
- Designed for the TIG welding of low-alloy and stainless steels (nickel content max. 20%).
- Not a substitute for protective gas – to be used when gas is not applicable.
- Protects the root side but is not equivalent to an argon-protected root side.
- Removes oxide inclusions and exhaust oxides during welding.
- Can replace protective gas (if the application does not permit gas protection on the root side), tape and ceramic backing.
- Acts as a backing by distributing heat evenly below the weld.
- Chemical function removes impurities from weld pools.
- Supplied as a powder – mix with industrial alcohol (methanol, ethanol) or distilled water prior to welding, three parts powder to two parts liquid.
