A shaft seal mainly consists of a metal stiffening ring and a vulcanised sealing element. Shaft seals are used, for example, to seal the space between a rotating shaft and a static housing. Nitrile rubber is the most commonly used sealing lip material, offering good resistance to mineral and vegetable oils, wear resistance and flexibility. The material is also suitable for use with inorganic, alkaline and acidic media, provided that the solutions are dilute and the temperatures moderate.
